Today wine to vineyard traceability (following the farm to fork concept) is a desired and much discussed topic in the wine industry for two reasons: for quality wine as a premium product, such information has value in wine marketing and sales, but also genuine traceability of wine production conditions and conducted activities can have a considerable effect on wine safety and quality.
The concept of providing full vineyard data and traceability from vineyard to bottle is currently used for a very limited number of wines we find on the shelves, as with today’s information technology solutions, it can be implemented to a high degree only with single-organisation wine producers using one information system, or a small number of tightly integrated information systems, for all stages of production: from grape growing through to winery processing, bottling and distribution, to sales.
More than 80% of the wine production actors, particularly grape growing in Europe today, is highly fragmented and works as a cooperation of a number of entities (grower, advisor, winery, marketing company, distributors) to bring the final product, wine, to the market shelves. For such a fragmented value chain, sharing of data for traceability reasons, which can be used either for food safety, marketing purposes, or quality improvement, is considerably more difficult and today almost never applied in a multi-actor environment.
In these multi-actor value chains, trust between vineyard and winery is extremely important from (1) perspective of food safety and (2) perspective of providing terroir information, which can be used by the winery to optimise the quality of the wine by appropriate winemaking process, and consequently elevate the value of the final product – the wine.
eVine2Wine aims to provide trusted and controlled data sharing using Digital Twins of the vineyard areas with iShare providing identity and access control mechanisms, and piloted across 4 real-world organisations from 3 countries: vineyard manager (JoJo’s Vineyard, Chiltern Hills Farm) will be able to decide which data from their vineyard management software system (eVineyard) to share with the award-winning winery they are supplying grapes to (Langham Wine), with the advisor who advises them on agronomic matters (Vinescapes), and with the marketing company (Digital Stories, provider of “Digital Wine” service www.digitalwine.de) that helps them differentiate their sustainably produced wine on the market, in the eyes of the final consumer.
Integrations and software components will be developed for the TRL-8 and piloted for the demonstration, allowing all of the stakeholders to access the relevant, securely and voluntarily shared data from the vineyard: be it wine consumer, cellar personnel, advisor, marketing company, or any other stakeholder in the value chain.
