The Challenge

The rapidly increasing number of IoT-assets in public space, the staggering amount of data they produce and their growing interdependence raises new challenges for cities and suppliers. These challenges relate to growing concerns on data ownership, GDPR-compliance, responsibilities in a multi stakeholder landscape and managing service level agreements, to name but a few.

A consequence of these challenges is that many smart city projects get stuck in good intentions. To bring the ecosystem of smart city solutions past the PoC and pilot phase, it is necessary to share data across subsystems in a consistent, secure and interoperable way to clearly  indicate,  in the exploitation phase, who is responsible for what and when. Increasing legal, ethical and security requirements are imposed on IoT-devices, the need for strong governance, monitoring and logging is growing each day.

These challenges are clearly visible when it comes to the smart lamppost. For years, a promising perspective is painted of the lamppost as a multifunctional device, combining sensors, camera’s, EV-charging, connectivity and other functions. Reality is, that between the many opportunities described and current implementation practices, many barriers exist. Among these barriers are: the growing number of requirements imposed on IoT-devices in public spaces, lack of insights, assessment criteria and management of the whole value chain and service processes. These barriers hinder the development of positive use cases.

The Solution

The objective of SLAM is to connect the dots and take away these barriers, with an integrated approach combining a technical data platform, marketplace and service portal. SLAM provides insight for cities and companies. Cities know exactly what is implemented in which lamppost (with all relevant data) and companies gain insights on what is allowed or possible in which location (including relevant criteria and conditions). A structured data sharing approach helps to engage citizens and improves transparency and access to open data.
